AFA - TWENTY YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE
In early 1990, a rookie quarterback named Brett
Favre played in his first professional football game,
a skinny 29-year-old law student named Barack
Obama had just been selected as editor of the
Harvard Law Review, and Santa Rosa Junior
College faculty ratified its first collective bargaining
contract. This contract marked the beginning of
the All Faculty Association, an independent union
representing the faculty of SRJC.
Fast-forward twenty years to 2010: Brett Favre has
started 293 consecutive games and won three MVP
trophies; Barack Obama is the forty-fourth President
of the United States; and AFA is still on the job,
working harder than ever as an independent union to
protect salaries, benefits, and working conditions of
both adjunct and regular faculty at SRJC.
AFA’s twentieth anniversary provides an
opportunity to review why we have chosen to remain
independent for over two decades. What follows is

STATE ASSEMBLY BILL 1807 FOLLOWS
SRJC’S LEAD IN HOURLY ASSIGNMENT RIGHTS
Since 1995, when AFA successfully negotiated Article 16: Hourly Assignments, Santa Rosa Junior College has provided adjunct faculty members with certain rights related to assignment priority and like load. In California, AFA′s Article 16 has been considered the gold-star standard for adjunct faculty job security for over a decade, and now it looks like the rest of the community colleges in the State may have an opportunity to follow our lead.
Earlier this year, State Assembly Members Fong and Nava introduced legislation on reemployment preference for adjunct faculty as AB 1807. FACCC co-sponsored this bill, which was also supported by CFT, CPFA, CCA, CWA and CCCI. The last action on AB 1807 was May 18, 2010 and it is currently being “held in submission.”
